Known as ‘The Greek’ with reference to being born on Crete, an island of Greece, Domenikos Theotocopoulos is considered the first genius of the Spanish School. His works were always signed in greek letters with his full name and sometimes followed by 'Kres' meaning Cretan.

El Greco had a unique artistic style. Becuase of his use of elongated and twisted forms, it is believed by many that El Greco had a stigmatism.
